Four orchestral dances

Composed for standard double winds symphonic orchestra. A set of 4 miniatures exploring a multitude of styles. Everything from the grandest of orchestral tuttis in the “Rondo”, to small and intimate timbres of the “Intermezzo”.

These can be played as a suite or separately. Intermezzo especially fits into an otherwise orchestral programme as a light snack.

  • This is a light and airy piece dominated by a rhythmic motif that is passed around the orchestra. The contrast of the moving against the static is explored here. It also features a heartfelt cantabile in the middle section.

  • This Latin-American inspired dance is filled with drama and grandeur. The main melody is highly chromatic, but also beautiful. Creating a lot of tension in the harmony and suspense builds throughout before culminating in a huge tutti. The string section sings the main melody in the climax in a huge octave unison. Meanwhile the brass lays down the rhythm.

  • This simple piece but short piece in 2/4 is only scored for the strings. Two solo violas present the melody in hauntingly beautiful thirds. The violins take it up for the repetition and the melody is complemented by embellishments. Further bringing out the lamenting tone.

  • This waltz features some very delightful dance-able melodies, but also takes a slightly dark twist towards the end. Where the main waltz team gets twisted leading into a huge finale where the whole orchestra joins in a grand major chord at the end.
